Our Editorial Process & Guidelines
At WithoutWith, trust is the cornerstone of everything we do. Our commitment is to provide you with the most accurate, unbiased, and useful ingredient information possible. This document outlines the principles and processes that guide our work to ensure we meet this standard.
1. Our Human-in-the-Loop Verification Process
To provide accurate data at scale, we use a "Human-in-the-Loop" system. This combines the efficiency of technology with the essential oversight of human experts.
- Physical Product Sourcing: Our primary source of truth is always the physical product's ingredient label. We do not rely on brand websites or marketing materials, which can be outdated or incomplete.
- AI-Assisted Transcription: We use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to perform an initial digital transcription of the ingredient label from a high-resolution photograph.
- Mandatory Human Review & Correction: Every single AI-generated transcription is passed to a human analyst. The analyst meticulously compares the transcription to the original image, correcting any errors in spelling, order, or punctuation. No product is published until this manual verification is complete.
- AI-Assisted Analysis & Content Generation: Once the ingredient list is verified, our AI systems cross-reference it against our ingredient databases to identify concerns and benefits. The AI then generates a draft analysis, including the detailed content sections and FAQ.
- Final Expert Review: The entire AI-generated report is reviewed by a lead product analyst. They refine the language for clarity, check for factual accuracy, and ensure the tone is helpful and unbiased before publishing.
2. Curation of "Without" and "With" Ingredient Lists
Our classification of ingredients is not based on opinion or trends. We use an evidence-based approach to curate the master lists for each category.
- Data-Driven "Without" List (Concerns): Ingredients are flagged as concerns based on findings from reputable scientific bodies, regulatory agencies (e.g., EU's CosIng, FDA), and respected consumer advocacy groups (e.g., Environmental Working Group). We prioritize concerns related to potential hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, skin sensitivity, and environmental impact.
- Evidence-Based "With" List (Benefits): Ingredients are highlighted as beneficial based on established scientific literature supporting their efficacy for specific purposes (e.g., hyaluronic acid for hydration, zinc oxide for sun protection).
- Regular Review: Science evolves, and so do our lists. We conduct regular reviews of our master ingredient lists to ensure they reflect the latest research and regulatory standards.
3. Brand Neutrality and Affiliate Disclosure
Our analysis and ratings are independent and objective.
- No Paid Placement: We do not accept payment from brands to alter an analysis, promote a product, change an ingredient's classification, or guarantee inclusion in our database.
- Affiliate Links: To fund our operations, we may use affiliate links. If you purchase a product through one of our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This financial model does not influence our editorial content or product ratings. For more details, please see our Disclaimer.
4. Corrections and Updates
We are committed to accuracy. Product formulations can change, and despite our rigorous process, errors can happen. If you believe you have found an error in our data or analysis, we want to know.
Please contact us with a link to the product page and, if possible, a photo of the ingredient label in question. We will investigate all reported inaccuracies and, if verified, correct our database and content promptly.
