Our Editorial Process & Guidelines
At WithoutWith, trust is the cornerstone of everything we do. Our commitment is to provide you with the most accurate, unbiased, and useful ingredient information possible. This document outlines the principles and processes that guide our work.
1. Data Sourcing and Verification
Our data pipeline is a "human-in-the-loop" system that combines technology with rigorous human oversight to ensure accuracy.
- Physical First: Our primary source of truth is always the physical product's ingredient label. We do not rely on brand websites or marketing materials for ingredient lists, as these can be outdated or incomplete.
- AI-Assisted Transcription: We use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to perform an initial transcription of the ingredient label from a high-resolution photograph.
- Human Review: Every single AI-generated transcription is passed to a human analyst. The analyst compares the transcription to the original image, correcting any errors in spelling, punctuation, or order. No product is published until this manual verification is complete.
2. Ingredient Analysis and Classification
Once an ingredient list is verified, it is cross-referenced against our master "Without" (concerns) and "With" (benefits) lists for each category.
- Objective Matching: Our system flags ingredients based on the predefined lists for that product's category. This is an objective process based on the data we've compiled.
- Evidence-Based Lists: Our "Without" and "With" lists are not based on opinion. They are curated from scientific studies, regulatory body guidelines (like the FDA and EU's CosIng database), and reports from reputable consumer and environmental groups. We provide explanations for why each ingredient is on a list.
- Dynamic and Reviewed: Science evolves, and so do our lists. We conduct regular reviews of our master ingredient lists to ensure they reflect the latest research and regulatory standards.
3. Content Generation and Expert Review
The "Expert Analysis" and product descriptions are generated with AI assistance to ensure consistency and clarity, but they are always based on the verified data.
- AI as a Tool: We use generative AI to draft the initial analysis, summarizing the findings from the ingredient matching process. This ensures every analysis follows a consistent structure.
- Expert Oversight: The drafted analysis is reviewed by our lead product analyst, Jane Doe, or a member of her team. They refine the language for clarity, check for factual accuracy, and ensure the tone is helpful and unbiased.
- No Paid Placement: We never accept payment from brands to alter an analysis, promote a product, or change an ingredient's classification. Our analysis is independent and data-driven.
4. Corrections and Updates
We are committed to accuracy. If you believe you have found an error in our data or analysis, we want to know. Please contact us with a link to the product page and, if possible, a photo of the ingredient label in question. We will investigate all reported inaccuracies and, if verified, correct our database and content promptly.
